Science, Culture, & Humanities / FO: Space Storm Alert
« Last post by Crafty_Dog on May 10, 2024, 07:39:45 AM »

(2) NOAA ISSUES FIRST SEVERE SPACE STORM WATCH IN TWO DECADES: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center issued a Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch yesterday, the first since 2005.

According to NOAA, at least five Earth-directed coronal mass ejections are expected to arrive as early as midday today, and persist through Sunday, 12 May.

Why It Matters: Geomagnetic storms could impact Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation, long-range radio communications, and critical infrastructure, including the electric grid. – R.C.

Politics & Religion / FO: Symbolic Tariffs
« Last post by Crafty_Dog on May 10, 2024, 07:38:10 AM »
(1) BIDEN ADMIN: CHINA TARIFFS WILL BE MOSTLY SYMBOLIC: According to people familiar with the matter, the Biden administration will announce new tariffs targeting China’s electric vehicle (EV), battery, and solar cell industries as soon as next week.
“I don’t think it will have a major impact, as the original tariffs already hit them hard,” Singapore Management University law professor Henry Gao said.
Why It Matters: China dominates global markets on battery components and solar wafers. However, these new tariffs are unlikely to hit those Chinese industries because most U.S. imports are done through third countries. According to a Commerce Department investigation into the solar industry, the origin of the components is obscured by third countries and importers to get around tariffs on these components. Tariffs on Chinese EVs are very likely to be inconsequential for now, as Chinese EV makers have not penetrated the U.S. market, and demand for EVs is decreasing, likely due to issues with chargers, high cost, and reliability. The Biden administration’s goal is likely to look tough on China but avoid economic pain for Americans ahead of the November election. – R.C.

"What did someone call her here?  Dowager Empress?"

Yup, that would be me.  :-D

Biden could roomba himself off a stage and crack his head or in some other way the farce implodes.  In such a case, who do the Dems have?

Politics & Religion / The bombed Chinese embassy in Serbia

I'm guessing our 'accidental' (?) bombing of the Chinese embassy in Serbia has fallen off our radar screens, but is well remembered by the Chinese.

A thought:

Once we start going on a case-by-case basis, the bright line will be vaporized.   There may be costs to it, but I'm thinking a bright line is worth it to have the privacy of our communications from the Surveillance State.

Politics & Religion / Israel, Bret Stephens, Biden's biggest blunder ever
« Last post by DougMacG on May 10, 2024, 06:13:47 AM »
Biggest blunder, and that is saying a lot!  Cutting off aid to Israel.

https://dnyuz.com/2024/05/09/president-biden-just-made-his-biggest-blunder/

Also strange if he cared, they just made big deals with the Republican House to get this aid that Biden is cutting off.

Allegedly supplying weapons to this effort is to assist in a war crime.  Not supporting Israel and eradicating Hamas is a worse and more humanly costly war crime.

Politics & Religion / Far Right and Far Left antisemitism

I can' say about Europe or elsewhere
but in the US the Left is demonstrating >>>> more antisemitism than the Right.

meaning the Democrats.

When is the last time we saw a group of about a dozen white supremacists or KKK denouncing Jews on 200 college campuses?

I don't like the headlines which as usual seem to minimize Democrat responsibility with the admonishment "they are all doing it on both sides" schtick.
