We will never really know for sure what happened to Epstein.
My guess , which is worthless , is either this was total incompetence , or he bribed his way to be able to kill himself.
His lawyers probably had a part though I suspect inadvertently - to get him a solo cell, off the more restricted suicide watch etc.
Now of course they want to continue billing for hours. Think of the money involved to them.

In prisons/jails you would normally have control centers where the camera feeds are monitored in real time while also being backed up on a recording medium, like a DVR type system. Any malfunctions would have a paper trail.

My understanding and reason for doubting foul play was that there was no camera working in his cell but there were cameras in hallways etc and we would know exactly who entered his cell when if they did. This statement above contradicts that. If a series of cameras were systematically out, that changes everything. If murder, then evidence of who tampered with cameras is part of the murder.

with multiple reasons huge numbers of people would want him dead, and high risk of suicide

I find it strange too. Americans care about British royals because they want to. They secretly wish there was some class above us of great wisdom and virtue. [And there isn't.] On the day Princess Di died, heard it on the radio driving to a gathering where others wouldn't have been following the news and told it to others when I arrived. I remember being shocked by the reaction, like they just lost their only child. I felt bad about telling it in a completely indifferent manner. I was thinking it had the significance of a baseball score.

If it wasn't for Barr we probably would never even have heard about this. The first response I have seen from the higher ups in such situations is not to really try to get to the bottom of it, but to cover it up.

Ghislaine Maxwell told a former acquaintance that she and Jeffrey Epstein had “everything on videotape,” it has been claimed.
Christina Oxenberg, a socialite and distant relative of the royals, said Ms Maxwell also once told her that Epstein had purchased his own helicopter because commercial pilots were “eyes and ears” they did not need.
She revealed she had spoken to the FBI about what she had been told.
Ms Oxenberg, 57, first met Maxwell in the early 1990s and said she would never forget a conversation the pair once had in Maxwell’s home.
“We were alone,” she said. “She said many things. All creepy. Unorthodox. Strange. I could not believe whatever she was saying was real. Stuff like: 'Jeffrey and I have everyone on videotape.’”...

An FBI special agent testified to a New York court in Ghislaine Maxwell's sex trafficking trial on Monday that evidence “went missing” from Jeffrey Epstein’s New York townhouse while authorities were waiting on a warrant.
Special Agent Kelly Maguire recalled how CDs and other items were recovered by the FBI from a locked safe during an initial search of the Manhattan home on July 6 and July 7, 2019, after Epstein’s arrest on sex assault charges.
The FBI agent said officers broke open the safe with a saw, finding the CDs, jewellery, computer hard drives, "loose diamonds", passports and “large amounts of US currency.”
They took photographs of the items, but left them at the residence as they did not have the warrant to remove them. When they returned four days later, on July 11, they were no longer there.
Agent Maguire, a member of an FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, said she then called Richard Kahn, Epstein’s lawyer who now serves as the executor of the later financier’s estate, to ask what happened to the items.
“Twenty to thirty minutes after the conversation, Richard Kahn came to the residence and brought them items back in two suitcases,” Agent Maguire said.
She could not confirm the content on the returned CDs was the same as the ones that were taken, but confirmed all the items were accounted for.
Boxes of CDs and hard drives were discovered in several rooms in Epstein’s eight-storey Upper East Side apartment in Manhattan, including in a so-called massage room. Some, Agent McGuire testified, had “evidence tape” sealing them. She told the court the tape had not been put there by police.
On the fifth floor, FBI agents also found a shelf full of large black binders. The binders held CDs, carefully categorised in plastic slipcovers and thumbnails with photos on them.
Another FBI agent who took to the stand on the sixth day of Ms Maxwell sex-trafficking trial confirmed one CD contained a photograph of the British socialite and Epstein.
Federal prosecutors previously alluded to the contents of the safe in July, 2019, when they sought to have a judge deny Epstein's bail application later that month.

According to reports at the time, a trove of lewd photographs of children was found in the safe at the property.
Court papers said that alongside photos were compact discs with handwritten labels including: “‘Young [Name] + [Name],’ ‘Misc nudes 1,’ and ‘Girl pics nude.”
There was also a passport from a foreign country with a picture of Epstein under another name.
The mansion had 40 rooms and Ms Maguire testified on Monday that it took about 12 hours for her team to fully search.

Back in 2002, when I was reporting on Jeffrey Epstein’s finances for Vanity Fair magazine, he was not a household name. During that time, I paid a visit to the Federal Medical Center, Devens in Devens, Massachusetts, to meet with an inmate, one Steven Hoffenberg.
What Was the Real Relationship Between Jeffrey Epstein and Bill Gates?
We sat in a little room near a recreation area, Hoffenberg dressed in the requisite orange jumpsuit, while I, several months pregnant with twins, was dressed per prison requirements: as shapelessly as possible.
It was an absolutely intriguing meeting.
Hoffenberg was serving 18 years in prison for committing a $450 million Ponzi scheme. In the 1980s, he’d been running Towers Financial, a debt collection and reinsurance business, and had worked alongside Epstein, who was a paid consultant. Hoffenberg told me that Epstein had plans to turn Towers into a global colossus — through illegal means.
But Hoffenberg was so transfixed by Epstein and his ideas that he had even paid the rent for Epstein’s office space. (Now, he says, he was “stupid” and greedy for doing so.)

Hoffenberg told me with a sad grin that he represented a problem for Epstein because while they were working together, Epstein had confided in him as to how, exactly, he made a career out of conning people and institutions — not least because the idea was that they’d do it together.
Hoffenberg said that Epstein had a term for the perfect execution of the grift. He called it “playing the box,” which meant that he ensured that even if his crime was uncovered, the victim would be unable to do anything about it, either because of social embarrassment or because the money was tucked away in a place where they couldn’t either find it or get it.
(What Hoffenberg had failed to realize, he told me, is that Epstein would con him. Epstein would take $100 million of Towers money, move it offshore, and meanwhile cooperate with U.S. prosecutors against Hoffenberg, who was unable to do anything about this because he’d pleaded guilty, which meant there was no trial — and therefore no discovery.)
I can’t prove all of Hoffenberg’s claims — but some of them are accurate.
I have discovered, for example, that Epstein certainly did secretly cooperate against Hoffenberg and gave at least three interviews to prosecutors, and that had the case gone to trial, a source with knowledge says it would have likely turned out far worse for Epstein than for Hoffenberg.
Hoffenberg also knew something else Epstein wanted hidden, according to Hoffenberg: He claimed that Epstein moved in intelligence circles.
The Hoffenberg-Epstein relationship was not something Epstein, then pitching himself to Vanity Fair as a money-manager extraordinaire for billionaires only, had volunteered to me.
So when I gingerly raised Hoffenberg to Epstein, and mentioned I had documentation showing that the two were linked, the financier turned really nasty.
He maintained he hardly knew Hoffenberg, he’d just consulted briefly on a couple of deals, that he’d not been involved in any prosecution of Hoffenberg and that if I wrote any different, things would turn out badly for me. Here is exactly what he said:
“If there’s any implication of wrong doing, I will take legal action against you personally. I’m telling you so you understand. I will be as harsh as I possibly can personally … not for the magazine, but you, because I had this discussion with you. This relationship is with you.… You shouldn’t risk your future for a job.”
Now, Epstein’s “sensitivity” regarding Hoffenberg was equal to his sensitivity on what he called “the girls.”
He went berserk if you mentioned either subject.
In hindsight, one has to wonder if Hoffenberg presented an equally big problem as “the girls” would. Hoffenberg told me that in the 1980s, after Epstein left Bear Sterns in ignominious circumstances, Epstein was trained in moving money off-shore and that a mentor of Epstein’s was someone Hoffenberg knew: a British defense contractor, who died in 2011, named Douglas Leese.
Hoffenberg claimed that Leese was an arms dealer. (Leese’s son Julian says that is not true.) But the U.K. parliamentary record does mention Leese in reference to the El Yammamah arms deal of the early 1980s.
I remember distinctly that in our first meeting Hoffenberg told me that Leese was pivotal in understanding Jeffrey’s MO, because Leese had introduced him not only to aristocratic Europeans (who Epstein subsequently fleeced) but to all sorts of people in the arms business — including the late Turkish-born businessman Adnan Kashoggi — and, allegedly, the late media mogul Robert Maxwell.
Back in 2002 I didn’t pay much attention to this.
This was because Epstein breezily threw me off.
First, Epstein told me he’d never met Maxwell. And I asked him twice if he knew Leese, whom I had never heard of, and Epstein said no. The second time, he elaborated:
“Douglas Leese … I think he was the father of somebody I knew … I think his son was friendly with Ferranti, that’s where that whole crowd comes in that you asked me about a long time ago. I think his name was Nicholas … it was sort of that 66th Street building, I think they might have all lived there.”
So, I forgot about Leese. And I didn’t bother to pursue the notion that Epstein had known Maxwell.
But all these years later, Leese’s name popped up again in my new reporting for a podcast and a documentary series about Maxwell’s daughter Ghislaine, who is currently awaiting trial on charges of helping Epstein in his alleged sex-trafficking operations of minors. (She has denied all charges.)
First, I found a lawsuit filed by Leese in Florida, in which he asserted that he “was involved with various highly confidential business enterprises including business in the United States, some of which involved governmentally- involved or other highly confidential business projects.”
Second, a source who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of what was discussed told me that Epstein had invited the source to join him and Leese on a private-jet trip to the Pentagon in 1981.
Even Leese’s son Julian told me that his father was a mentor of sorts to Epstein in the 1980s and was totally shocked that Epstein would have pretended not to know him.
So why Epstein’s silence on Leese?
And was his denial about knowing Robert Maxwell equally meaningless?
What about the spy stuff?
Hoffenberg told me that Epstein had said he’d worked on several projects with Robert Maxwell, including solving Maxwell’s “debt” issues. (Maxwell died in 1991, under vey strange circumstances, apparently having fallen off his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, in the middle of the night and it was discovered in the aftermath that he’d stolen 100s of millions of dollars from the pensions of his employees.)
Epstein had also told Hoffenberg that via Maxwell and Leese he was involved in something that Hoffenberg described as “national security issues,” which he says involved “blackmail, influence trading, trading information at a level that is very serious and dangerous.”
So here’s where it gets tricky.
Four separate sources told me — on the record — that Epstein’s dealings in the arms world in the 1980s had led him to work for multiple governments, including the Israelis.
Some of these sources are more reliable than others. But the gist of the claims that you will be able to hear, and ultimately watch in a three-hour documentary series, is that Maxwell, who was himself a conduit between the Israelis and other governments during his life time, introduced Epstein to Israeli leaders, who then allegedly used Epstein as the equivalent of an old-fashioned Russian “sleeper,” someone who could be useful in an “influence campaign.”
The sources, who range from former arms dealers to former spies — and also Hoffenberg — suggest that Epstein, who lacked any sort of moral compass, decided to go one step further and compromise influential people by recording them doing things they wouldn’t want made public.
All of this is completely unprovable. And people close to Robert Maxwell say it sounds ridiculous.
But here’s what’s odd.
First, Epstein did visit Israel in 2008, with a view to moving there permanently and avoid his jail time in 2009 for the state charges he was convicted of. On his return, he told Russian model Kira Diktyar that he’d changed his mind and decided to face the music. (He didn’t mention he’d avoided a far more serious federal investigation, thanks to a cushy non-prosecution agreement.)
And once he got out of jail, in the last 10 years of his life, Epstein bragged to various people, including journalists, that he was advising a whole assortment of foreign leaders who included Vladimir Putin, Mohammed bin Zayed, Mohammed Bin Salman, various African dictators, Israel, the British — and, of course, the Americans.
He also told several of the same people that he was making a fortune out of arms, drugs, and diamonds.
He told one person, journalist Edward J. Epstein, that he knew the owner of the deep-water port of Djibouti on the horn of Africa, a smuggler’s paradise, so well that he was basically in charge of it.
Now, according to my sources in the intelligence world, this is hyperbole — but also not completely ridiculous. His name was mentioned as a middleman in both Africa and the Middle East. He was known in the intelligence world as a “hyper-fixer,” somebody who can go between different cultures and networks.
Usually these people are very silent about what they do.
And yet Epstein was not silent. He had a photo of the Saudi crown prince, MBS on the wall, and photos of Bill Gates and all the VIPS who flocked to his salons.
It’s not wholly surprising therefore that the same sources who say they know he was some sort of intelligence asset say that he became a liability — which is why, possibly, he lost any “protection” and was arrested.
A handful of people I interviewed, including former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky, maintain that this is exactly what happened to Robert Maxwell, which is why, they say, Maxwell was killed. His financial problems were about to make him vulnerable. (His death was officially said to be because of a heart attack.)
Who knows what to make of all this?
But, when I think back to 2002, when I first met Steve Hoffenberg, I do remember asking him why he thought that Epstein, normally reclusive, had raised his head above the parapet and attracted media attention by flying Bill Clinton to Africa.
Hoffenberg had smiled.
“He can’t help himself. He broke his own rule,” Hoffenberg said. “He always said he knew the only way he could get away with everything he did was to stay under the radar, but now he’s gone and blown it.”

Important to get the truth right in a criminal trial, and many of the these people are perhaps unreliable. But one simple truth is that a 14 year old, anyone under 18, is legally not capable of consenting to sex with an adult. The term is rape even if they willingly participate, and many of these guys, Bill Clinton for example, are lawyers.
Begs a simple question, why couldn't these really rich perverts [Democrats] just find really young women that are over 18, but still a third or a fourth of their own age?

Presumably. A friend of a tenant who hung out with his girlfriend at my property was arrested this past year. He looked young but was mid-twenties. She looked young, but turns out was underage. When I had seen them, I wouldn't have guessed the age of either of them. As I understand it, he dumped her and she retaliated by calling the police and having him arrested for multiple felonies. Law enforcement came out and ransacked my place looking for evidence and last I heard is doing real jail or prison time.
I don't know what to think about the whole thing, but legally it's not consent.

The attorney general of the US Virgin Islands has been fired by the territory's governor just days after filing a lawsuit accusing JPMorgan Chase of 'turning a blind eye' to Jeffrey Epstein's prolific sex crimes.
USVI Governor Albert Bryan Jr confirmed in a statement on Sunday that he had 'relieved Denise George of her duties as attorney general this weekend' without offering further details.
George, who had served as the territory's attorney general for four years, on Tuesday filed a massive lawsuit against JPMorgan, accusing the bank of 'knowingly providing and pulling the levers through which [Epstein's] recruiters and victims were paid.'
She did not warn Bryan of her intent to file the lawsuit, and the incident was the final straw in the governor's increasingly frustrated relationship with her, the Virgin Islands Consortium reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.

Bryan's spokesman told DailyMail.com that press reports citing the JPMorgan suit as the reason for George's dismissal were 'not entirely accurate.'
The governor's spokesman, Richard Motta Jr, declined to comment further, saying in a statement, 'I am not at liberty to discuss details on personnel matters.'

George did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday morning.
Governor Bryan, who is elected by residents of the territory, announced George's removal in a statement on New Year's Day, saying, 'I relieved Denise George of her duties as attorney general this weekend.'
'I thank her for her service to the people of the Territory during the past four years as Attorney General and wish her the best in her future endeavors,' added Bryan.

The governor said that Assistant Attorney General Carol Thomas-Jacobs will serve as acting attorney general.
In November, George reached a settlement of more than $105 million in a sex trafficking case against the estate of Epstein, who owned a private island in the territory where he abused underage girls.
Last week, George had filed a lawsuit in Manhattan District Court alleging that JPMorgan ignored the truth surrounding Epstein, such as his 2008 conviction in Florida for procuring a child for prostitution, in order to keep him as a client.
The bank kept Epstein as a client between 1998 and 2013 before finally cutting ties.
The bank has not yet responded to the allegations in the suit, and a spokeswoman for JPMorgan declined to comment on the suit when reached by DailyMail.com on Monday.
In court filings on Friday responding to a separate lawsuit, JPMorgan said it did not participate in or benefit from sex trafficking by its former client Epstein.

For years, the secretive financier was based out of his private island, Little St. James in the Virgin Islands.
He was found dead in August 2019 in his jail cell in Manhattan in what was ruled a suicide, while awaiting trial on sexual abuse of minors and trafficking charges.
In June, Epstein's former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years prison for trafficking minors for sex.
Epstein first became a client at Chase in 1998. There have been numerous reports since his death that the bank's executives sought to keep Epstein as a client due to his connections with some of the richest people in the world.
One section of the lawsuit reads: 'Human trafficking was the principal business of the accounts Epstein maintained at JPMorgan.'
AG George said that the suit was part of an 'outgoing effort' to bring accountability to those who helped facilitate Epstein's actions.
The complaint goes on to accuse Chase of concealing 'wire and cash transactions that raised suspicion of a criminal enterprise whose currency was the sexual servitude' of young girls.

The damages being sought by the US Virgin Islands are unspecified in the lawsuit.
George had been aggressive in seeking financial damages related to Epstein's crimes.
In November, Epstein's estate agreed to pay the territorial government $105 million in cash and half of the proceeds from the sale of Little St. James island, where Epstein owned a home and authorities allege many of his crimes took place.
The estate also will pay $450,000 to repair environmental damage on Great St. James, another island Epstein owned where authorities say he removed the ruins of colonial-era historical structures of slaves.
The money from the sale of Little St. James island will be placed in a government trust to finance projects, organizations, counseling and other activities to help residents who have been sexually abused, officials said.

‘Poor, smart and desperate to be rich’: How Epstein went from teaching to Wall Street BY LINDA ROBERTSON AND AARON BREZEL UPDATED JULY 21, 2019 5:06 PM Victims of Jeffrey Epstein share the emotional toll that sexual abuse has taken on them — even years after the abuse occurred. Miami Herald reporter Julie K. Brown interviewed the young women, most speaking for the first time about Epstein. BY EMILY MICHOT Before Jeffrey Epstein managed money for the world’s rich and powerful, he was educating their teenage children. Epstein, the accused sex trafficker awaiting a bail ruling in a Manhattan jail, taught math and physics at the Dalton School, a private K-12 institution whose students are the sons and daughters of New York City’s elite. It was there on the aristocratic Upper East Side in the mid-1970s that a charming, bright young man with a head for numbers catapulted from his Coney Island roots to a double life of astounding wealth and disturbing depravity. Jeffrey Epstein looked like this in the 1976 Dalton yearbook. He briefly taught at the Manhattan school. The Dalton School By the time he was 45, Epstein was living 18 blocks from Dalton in a nine-story mansion now worth $77 million, one of several posh homes where investigators say he molested dozens upon dozens of young girls, who were recruited to give him massages and coerced into sex acts. He followed a similar pattern at his waterfront estate in Palm Beach, where he pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution — despite facing far more serious crimes against underage girls — and received a remarkably lenient sentence, courtesy of U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta who would later become President Donald Trump’s labor secretary. Epstein launched his financier career during a parent-teacher conference at Dalton in 1976 when he dazzled a student’s father with his intelligence. Epstein confided that he wasn’t cut out to be a teacher. He envisioned himself on Wall Street. “This parent was so wowed by the conversation he told my father, ‘You’ve got to hire this guy,’ ” recalled Lynne Koeppel, daughter of the late Alan “Ace” Greenberg, an executive at Bear Stearns investment bank. “Give Jeff credit. He was brilliant.” Greenberg was also impressed by Epstein, then 23, a two-time college dropout and son of a parks department employee. Greenberg, son of an Oklahoma City women’s clothing store owner, rose from Bear Stearns clerk to CEO and had an affinity for employees he called “PSDs” — poor, smart and desperate to be rich. The children of some of New York’s elite passed through the doors of Dalton School, a private college preparatory school on New York City’s Upper East Side. Notable alumni include Anderson Cooper, Claire Danes and Sean Lennon. Jeffrey Epstein briefly taught there. Emily Michot emichot@miamiherald.com “That was Jeff,” Koeppel said. “He was very smart and he knew how to woo people, how to schmooze. He’s personable and makes good company.” Did Epstein purposely position himself at Dalton to get a foot on the ladder to jet-setting, celebrity-mingling, power-brokering high society? “If that was his plan, it worked,” she said. Epstein, now 66, started his job at the Dalton School at age 21 without a college degree and taught high school students only a few years younger than he was. He was informal, friendly and liked to joke around, former students said. He was popular with female pupils, despite his puzzling personality. “Epstein was considered a little creepy by the girls,” alumna Karin Williams said. “I won’t say that the girls didn’t like him. But they thought he was odd.” Despite his short stint, Epstein left an impression. “He’s the only man who I’ve ever met who had a full-length fur coat,” said Williams, who remembered the coat as Epstein’s flamboyant 1970s fashion statement at a school with a conservative dress code. Student-teacher relationships were not unheard of at Dalton, former students said. It was a permissive time in the United States, and 40 years before #MeToo. However, no one who spoke to the Herald recalled Epstein engaging in a relationship or initiating unwanted physical contact with them. “In retrospect, you could see how maybe he was looking for young nymphs,” said alumna Heidi Knecht-Seegers. “But I didn’t have a class with him and I was one of the few who didn’t drink or smoke or go to parties.” Epstein — a math whiz as a kid — rose quickly at Bear Stearns, making partner by 1980 as reported in a 2002 New York Magazine profile. But while Epstein impressed traders and hedge fund managers, many of his students were less taken. Jeffrey Epstein in the Dalton School 1976 yearbook The Dalton School “To me he didn’t belong there,” said Maya Travaglia, who had Epstein for 10th grade math. “It just felt very unformed. He didn’t command the class.” Joshua Persky, who graduated in 1977, had Epstein for physics. “I thought he was okay,” Persky said. “Once in a while, he could not complete a complex homework problem, which I didn’t mind either.” Peter Thomas Roth, who later founded an eponymous skin care company, described Epstein as an “amazing” physics teacher of his favorite class on Facebook. Epstein also tutored Roth in statistics to prepare him for the Wharton School at Penn. Still, some kids complained to school administrators, Persky said. “I think it was unusual that a school focused on quality education would hire a person with no experience and no college degrees, especially when the Dalton teachers we knew were excellent,” said E. Belvin Williams, former Dalton trustee and associate dean of Columbia University’s Business School. “My hunch is he had contacts with parents or board members.” Palm Beach multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein has been a free man, despite sexually abusing dozens of underage girls according to police and prosecutors. His victims have never had a voice, until now. BY EMILY MICHOT By comparison, Travaglia noted, her geometry teacher was Yves Volel, an activist and Haitian presidential candidate who was assassinated in the late ’80s. Volel’s style was much more rigorous. Ultimately, Epstein’s haphazard, uninspired teaching led to his dismissal after the 1975-76 school year, according to Peter Branch who was the head of the high school. “It was determined that he had not adequately grown as a new teacher to the standard of the school,” Branch said. The Dalton School is one of a group of New York private schools known for demanding academics. And like its peers, Dalton is expensive. Tuition in the mid-’70s was about $3,200 for upper school students. Today it’s over $50,000. There’s a focus on the arts at Dalton. Notable alumni include Anderson Cooper, Claire Danes, Sean Lennon — the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono — and a long list of actors, artists and musicians. Curriculum follows “the Dalton Plan,” which encourages each student to make his or her own educational choices. The school offered a rich assortment of classes — 10 languages, including Russian; printmaking; jewelry-making; sculpture and drawing classes with nude models. Persky performed modern dance with Jennifer Grey — “Baby” from “Dirty Dancing” — and Shauna Redford, daughter of Robert Redford. The Dalton School, a private college preparatory school on New York City’s Upper East Side. The middle and high school building at 108 E. 89th St., one of its three buildings, is undergoing a major reconstruction. Emily Michot emichot@miamiherald.com Epstein arrived during a transition period for the Dalton School. The previous headmaster, Donald Barr, father of current Attorney General William Barr, quarreled with the board of trustees and resigned. Barr was a disciplinarian who clashed with the progressive parents. Two alums described him as a “bully.” “Donald Barr was a very authoritarian headmaster,” Karin Williams said. Following Barr’s departure, T-shirts and sneakers were incorporated into the dress code. Blue jeans and “long male hair” were still prohibited, according to The Daltonian, the school’s newspaper. Travaglia remembers administrators measuring the length of girls’ skirts during the Barr years. Barr left a semester before Epstein arrived and it’s unclear whether Barr had a hand in hiring him. Branch, who was interim headmaster, did not remember who hired him. Apart from Epstein, Dalton has weathered a few of its own scandals in recent years. In 2013, a school email to boosters and donors included a confidential list of children who had been rejected. Gardner Dunnan, the headmaster who succeeded Barr, has been sued, accused of sexually assaulting a female student that he let stay in his apartment in 1986. The case has been transferred to the Southern District of New York, where Epstein is being prosecuted for alleged sex trafficking. Epstein built a career making connections with the well connected. He got his start at Dalton and never moved far away. At Dalton, he was surrounded by the young girls he became fixated on as an alleged sexual predator, and schools became his preferred hunting ground. His most recent accuser, Jennifer Araoz, said she was approached by one of Epstein’s recruiters when she was a 14-year-old freshman outside The Talent Unlimited High School on East 68th Street, a handful of blocks from his mansion. She was brought to him by a woman in her 20s who told her he was a caring man who could help her become an actress. He showed Araoz around his opulent townhouse with its super-sized decor of statues, taxidermy, leopard-print furniture and a Steinway grand piano, while white-gloved servants offered her wine and cheese, according to her court filings and an NBC interview. She was paid $300 for her visits until the day a massage in a special room with angels painted on the sky-blue ceiling turned into rape, Araoz said. Even Epstein’s friends remarked -- in flattering tones -- on how Epstein loved women and was frequently in the company of young women in New York, Palm Beach, at his Zorro Ranch in New Mexico or his private island in the Caribbean. His jet was nicknamed the “Lolita Express.” At the Interlochen School for the Arts in Michigan, Epstein targeted 13-year-old Nadia Bjorlin, according to her mother, who told the Daily Mail that Epstein offered to be Nadia’s “godfather” and foster her singing career. Bjorlin’s mother, wary of Epstein and his aggressive assistant Ghislaine Maxwell, rejected his perverse proposal; Nadia went on to become a soap opera star. Araoz and Bjorlin had both lost their fathers shortly before Epstein approached them. Epstein, a talented pianist who attended Interlochen summer camp as a kid, donated $17,000 and a new cabin adjacent to the girls’ dorms to the school in the woods. Epstein created a self portrait, framing himself as a wealthy party host, philanthropist and intellectual, donating money of uncertain origins from his foundations to arts organizations, scientists, Harvard University, the Santa Fe Institute think tank and cancer research funds. He gave $180,000 to Ballet Florida in West Palm Beach, some of that earmarked for therapeutic massages. The all-girls Hewitt School, located four blocks from his Manhattan mansion, received $15,000. Epstein donated $75,000 to Dalton, springboard to the role he wanted to play. The last time she saw her old teacher, a Dalton alumna recalled, Epstein was crossing Park Avenue at 71st Street with Woody Allen and his young wife, Soon-Yi Previn. Say what you will about the people who sit atop America’s elite institutions but many of them sure seem to believe in giving second chances to convicts—or at least to one convict. Even after officially becoming a sex offender who preyed on a child, Jeffrey Epstein seems to have been welcomed into the company of some of the world’s most powerful people. Perhaps they can now describe other convicts they welcomed into their business and social scene. And if they can’t, it seems additional explanation is in order to clarify what exactly they found special about Epstein.
The Journal’s Khadeeja Safdar, David Benoit and Kara Dapena report:
On Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, Jeffrey Epstein had a full calendar. He was scheduled to meet that day with Bill Gates, Thomas Pritzker, Leon Black and Mortimer Zuckerman, four of the richest men in the country, according to schedules and emails reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
Epstein also planned meetings that day with a former top White House lawyer, a college president and a philanthropic adviser, three of the dozens of meetings the Journal reported he had with each of them.
It’s hard to think of people who had more options when it comes to financial expertise or philanthropic support. They are surely some of the most well-connected people in the country. Did they need to do business with Epstein? In describing the various meetings, the Journal reporters note:
The Four Seasons, a luxury-hotel chain in which Mr. Gates’s investment firm holds a stake, was the next scheduled stop. There, Epstein introduced Mr. Gates to Kathryn Ruemmler, who until earlier that year had served as President Obama’s top White House lawyer.
Over the next few years, Epstein often had appointments with Ms. Ruemmler, who was a partner at Latham & Watkins at the time and is now general counsel at Goldman Sachs.
Ms. Ruemmler had a professional relationship with Epstein and many of their meetings were about a mutual client, a Goldman Sachs spokesman said. “I regret ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein,” Ms. Ruemmler said... A spokeswoman for Latham & Watkins said Epstein wasn’t a client of the firm.

Say what you will about the people who sit atop America’s elite institutions but many of them sure seem to believe in giving second chances to convicts—or at least to one convict. Even after officially becoming a sex offender who preyed on a child, Jeffrey Epstein seems to have been welcomed into the company of some of the world’s most powerful people. Perhaps they can now describe other convicts they welcomed into their business and social scene. And if they can’t, it seems additional explanation is in order to clarify what exactly they found special about Epstein.
The Journal’s Khadeeja Safdar, David Benoit and Kara Dapena report:
On Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, Jeffrey Epstein had a full calendar. He was scheduled to meet that day with Bill Gates, Thomas Pritzker, Leon Black and Mortimer Zuckerman, four of the richest men in the country, according to schedules and emails reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
Epstein also planned meetings that day with a former top White House lawyer, a college president and a philanthropic adviser, three of the dozens of meetings the Journal reported he had with each of them.
It’s hard to think of people who had more options when it comes to financial expertise or philanthropic support. They are surely some of the most well-connected people in the country. Did they need to do business with Epstein? In describing the various meetings, the Journal reporters note:
The Four Seasons, a luxury-hotel chain in which Mr. Gates’s investment firm holds a stake, was the next scheduled stop. There, Epstein introduced Mr. Gates to Kathryn Ruemmler, who until earlier that year had served as President Obama’s top White House lawyer.
Over the next few years, Epstein often had appointments with Ms. Ruemmler, who was a partner at Latham & Watkins at the time and is now general counsel at Goldman Sachs.
Ms. Ruemmler had a professional relationship with Epstein and many of their meetings were about a mutual client, a Goldman Sachs spokesman said. “I regret ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein,” Ms. Ruemmler said... A spokeswoman for Latham & Watkins said Epstein wasn’t a client of the firm.

Tech billionaire and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel had several meetings with Epstein, the calendars show.
During one stretch in 2014 Thiel appears to have met Epstein three times in quick succession at a time when he was on the board of Facebook and in charge of venture capital firm Founders Fund.
He was also the chairman of analytics company Palantir, which works closely with the Department of Defense.
The logs show that in September 2014, Epstein's schedule listed Thiel under 'people to see'.
The two men met for dinner at Epstein's New York mansion on the 12th with Woody Allen present, the schedule says.
The following day Epstein met Thiel on his own from 2pm to 4pm after which Bill Burns, the current director of the CIA who was deputy secretary of state at the time, joined them for an hour.
The day after that, Epstein planned a lunch and said that 'maybe Peter Thiel' would come.
The two men were scheduled for lunch the following week and the entry lists Thiel's personal assistant and their number.
Thiel did not respond to DailyMail.com's request for comment.
