I had a patient tell me the benchpress record is well over 1,000 pounds now. I asked how is this possible. He said and I looked it up.
Not only steroids, but wraps, body suits that support muscle. Probably the highest natural unaided bench press is around 650:

Soviets started to use in athletes using Nazi research
then in 1954 an American doctor got wind of it and brought this back to US.

these non steroid chemicals that work primarily on muscle and in theory will have no or less side effects on other tissues
are being investigated:

However, they are not approved in US and appear to have dangerous side effects being reported as well:

difference of opinion on strength
wow look at skeletal structure difference
weird Neanderthals had short upper arms and short lower legs
https://www.quora.com/How-much-stronger-were-neanderthals-than-modern-homo-sapiens
they probably would have made for bone breaking arm wrestling champions.
