Mixed feelings, personal bias, because MN has taxes like NY and Calif and I have very high property taxes relative to income.

I am a big fan of GG.  Good to see him still kicking.  It will take time to digest this.  I expect to find major and lasting insights. That said, don't like his starting point de-emphasizing incentives and disincentives in economics.  I don't think that's helpful or necessary to make his other points.

" 1) The economy is not chiefly an incentive system. It is an information system."

Politics & Religion / Inflation, Income, Jobs, Biden Harris bot good! WSJ

Paywall, I would like to post the comparative chart.

Kamala Harris says the Biden Administration rescued the U.S. economy. The truth is that the Biden inflation has left most Americans worse off than they were before the pandemic. The latest evidence comes from Tuesday’s Census Bureau report on household income, poverty and health coverage in 2023.

The good, and maybe the only good, news is that the median inflation-adjusted household income increased last year for the first time since 2019. However, Hispanics, Asians and blacks didn’t experience statistically significant income growth.

Real median earnings for full-time workers last year declined 1.6% and even more for high-school grads (3.3%). This means inflation outpaced wage gains for most low-wage workers. One culprit may be that workers logged fewer hours and less overtime as the labor market started to soften, especially in leisure, hospitality and manufacturing.

The upshot is that real median household income remains lower than in 2019 and has barely grown since 2020. The contrast between the first three years of the Trump and Biden presidencies is striking. See the nearby table.

The statement comes from Luis Salas, who was the election judge for Jim Wells County’s notorious Box 13, which produced just enough votes in the 1948 Texas Democratic primary runoff to give Johnson the nomination, then tantamount to election, to the U.S. Senate.

“Johnson did not win the election; It was stolen for him. And I know exactly how it was done,” said Salas, now a lean, white-haired 76; then a swarthy 210-pound political henchman with absolute say over vote counts in his Mexican-American, South Texas, precinct.

Politics & Religion / Jonathon Turley points out the lies... Kamala Harris

With Fact-Checks Like These, How Does Truth Stand a Chance?
Below is my column in The Hill on the controversial role played by the ABC moderators in the presidential debate. Three false claims in the debate continue to be repeated in what is now our post-truth political environment. (ABC later challenged another claim by Harris on the deployment of U.S. troops).

Here is the column:

“You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts.”

That famous line from Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.) remains a virtual mantra for politicians and pundits. Yet, judging from the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, we have officially entered the post-truth political era.

ABC News has been widely criticized for the bias of the two moderators Linsey Davis and David Muir. Even liberal outlets acknowledged that the two journalists seemed inclined to “fact check” only Trump. In the meantime, they allowed clearly false statements from Harris to go unchallenged.

Three of the unchecked claims are being widely disseminated by supporters, including some in the media. Here are three legal “facts” that are being repeated despite being clearly untrue.

“Crime is down under the Biden-Harris administration.“

One of the most notable slap downs by ABC followed Trump commenting that crime rates have drastically risen during the Biden-Harris administration. Muir immediately balked and declared: “As you know, the FBI says overall violent crime is coming down in this country.”

Harris and her allies have been repeating the claim by ABC. But the actual statistics show that Trump was right. The Justice Department’s released survey found that, under the Biden administration, there has been a significant increase in crime. Violent crime was up 37 percent from 2020 to 2023, rape is up 42 percent, robbery is up 63 percent and stranger violence is up 61 percent. Other reports had shown startling increases such as a doubling of carjackings in D.C. in 2023.

“Harris has not supported transgender operations for undocumented migrants.”

Some of the greatest mocking in the media concerned Trump’s statement that Harris has supported transgender conversion treatment for undocumented persons. New Yorker staff writer Susan Glasser immediately wrote “What the hell was he talking about? No one knows, which was, of course, exactly Harris’s point.”

On CNN, Wolf Blitzer declared how “outlandish” it was for Trump to make such a claim.

But it’s true.

In 2019, Harris told the ACLU that she not only supported such operations but actively worked for at least one such procedure to take place. When it was reported by Andrew Kaczynski on CNN, host Erin Burnett was gobsmacked by the notion of taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for detained migrants. “She actually supported that?” Burnett exclaimed.

Even the New York Times later admitted that the “wildest sounding attack line” from Trump was “basically true.”

Harris does not support the right to abortion in the final three months of a pregnancy.

Trump also hit Harris on her no-limits position on abortion rights, allowing women the right to abort a baby up to the moment of birth. Trump said Harris supports laws allowing abortions in “the seventh month, the eighth month, [and] the ninth month,” to which Harris retorted: “C’mon,” “no,” and “that’s not true.”

The hosts again said that Trump was making up his criticism of late-term abortions, including the risk of babies being born but allowed to die.

But in fact, many states, including Minnesota under Gov. Tim Walz (D), protect the right of a woman to abort a baby into the ninth month. While it is often said that this is left to the mother and her doctor, the law gives the decision to the mother.

Late-term abortions are relatively rare, but they do occur. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report estimated in 2019 that about 4,882 abortions were performed that year at least 21 weeks or later into pregnancy.

More than a dozen states, in fact, allow on-demand abortions after a baby is viable and can even survive outside of the womb. Nine of those states permit abortions throughout the entirety of pregnancy. Harris has supported these state laws and certainly did not answer the question on what limits she would support, other than saying that she supports Roe v. Wade.

Clearly, many late-term abortions occur to protect the life of the mother. However, you can have (as both Trump and Harris support) exceptions to protect the life of the mother without allowing abortions up to the moment of birth.

To be sure, Trump did not help himself with his wilder claims. These included debunked accounts of Haitian migrants eating people’s pets in Ohio, which Ohio’s Republican governor, Mike Dewine, has denied.

The issue is not fact-checking, but the failure to do so equally and accurately. ABC actually disseminated false information under the mantle of fact-checking, and that’s a real problem.

Moderator Linsey Davis admitted later that ABC did not want a repeat of what had happened in the last debate, wherein Trump was given free rein and the moderators limited themselves to asking questions and enforcing time limits. CNN was praised in that debate across the political spectrum for being even-handed.

What is most striking about this election is that none of this seems to matter. Indeed, even the debate did not matter. While Trump can legitimately object to a three-against-one debate format, Harris’s victory was clearly not dependent on bad calls by the refs. However, there has been little overall movement in the polls, even though 67 million people were watching.

The era of post-truth politics is evident in Harris repeating false claims about Trump’s support for “Project 2025” and debunked claims regarding his comments about an extreme-right Charlottesville rally in 2017. Leading Democrats continue to make these false claims, in some cases despite knowing that they are false.

On the other side, Trump is making promises he has to know can never be fulfilled. For example, he has pledged to make flag-burning a federal crime with a penalty of two years’ incarceration. The Supreme Court, including conservatives like the late Justice Antonin Scalia, has ruled that flag burning is protected speech under the First Amendment. Neither a president nor Congress can change the meaning of the Constitution without amending it.

With the help of the media, we have reduced our election to a political Slurpee. It’s all sugar rush and no nutritional value. We now have pundits supporting the idea of no further debates and even arguing that Harris shouldn’t give any interviews because it’s too risky.

Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) explained that Harris should avoid one-on-one media interviews because “sometimes, you drill down into a question until there’s a word that’s uttered that can be used in a negative way.” I suppose, as president, she will need to insist on meeting foreign leaders only in CNN town hall events.

If you do not say anything, there are no facts to check. The election then becomes a vote over whether you are for or against “joy.”

What is clear from the ABC debate is that citizens are on their own in the election to find actual facts and substance in the super-sized Slurpee of the 2024 election.

“[Kamala’s] attention is now fully on barnstorming the purple areas of swing states,” Brown wrote, “focused less on appeasing the progressive base of the party than on winning over whichever voters are still making up their minds about how to vote in November — or if at all. The result has been a campaign that’s burning through the fuel the base provided when she became the nominee.”
...
"Policywise, this has meant shying away from some of the positions Harris took before assuming the vice presidency,” Brown wrote. “Her campaign has disavowed her support for a mandatory buyback program for assault weapons, for example, as well as her previous openness to expanding the Supreme Court. Any former support for ‘Medicare for All’ or banning fracking has been tucked into a box and shelved in the darkest recesses of the Naval Observatory. These are still good policies, in my view, but not the sort of thing Harris wanted to have in the spotlight.”

The Commission on the National Defense Strategy released its final report to Congress and the President in July. Walter Russell Mead comments on its disturbing conclusions:

The U.S. faces the “most serious and most challenging” threats since 1945, including the real risk of “near-term major war.” The report warns: “The nation was last prepared for such a fight during the Cold War, which ended 35 years ago. It is not prepared today.”

Worse, “China and Russia’s ‘no-limits’ partnership, formed in February 2022 just days before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has only deepened and broadened to include a military and economic partnership with Iran and North Korea. . . . This new alignment of nations opposed to U.S. interests creates a real risk, if not likelihood, that conflict anywhere could become a multitheater or global war.”

Should such a conflict break out, “the Commission finds that the U.S. military lacks both the capabilities and the capacity required to be confident it can deter and prevail in combat.” (Sources: wsj.com, armed-services.senate.gov)

Taxing Unrealized Capital Gains is point one.

(Doug). Democrats think they can 'tax the rich' without Taxing or hurting the rest. False.

Forced sales of stocks will hurt everyone who holds the stocks, including if course small investors, union or dion funds, everyone.  It is an interconnected economy.

Not mentioned with capital gains including Unrealized Capital Gains is that you are Taxing Inflation.

A nominal gain is not a real gain.  In economics, real means after inflation, as in real GDP growth, real wage growth etc.

Who proposes to fix that?  I don't know but Harris, Walz, Schumer, Hakim Jeffries all propose to make things worse.

I would use the 51%, preponderance of the evidence test. Policies and words, is she more interested in free enterprise or government programs and solutions.

She is certifiably to the Left of socialist Bernie Sanders, so assumed to be on that side of it unless evidence indicates otherwise, and it doesn't.

On housing, child care or healthcare , is she more interested in private sector real wage growth to improve affordability or a government program or subsidy? Given the choice, she will take the government every time she sees a fork in a road.

The question she and her side should be forced to answer, how much government is too much government?

It’s Not Just Springfield, This Small Town In Pennsylvania Is Overrun By Haitian Migrants, Too
The migrant influx has led to the town doubling its population

As covered by The Daily Wire, Springfield, Ohio, has seen a massive influx of Haitian migrants since 2020, wreaking havoc on public services and causing a myriad of social problems.

But Springfield is not the only town struggling with a sudden influx of Haitian migrants.

Charleroi, a small town in Pennsylvania, has seen a 2000% increase in its immigration population in the past two years, with the majority coming from Haiti. The small town had a population of about 4,200 in 2022, before the sudden influx. Charleroi’s population has since doubled, according to Charleroi Council President Kristin Hopkins-Calcek.

Residents are noticing similar problems as Springfield citizens. For one, driving in the area has become increasingly hazardous.

“The immigrants now have been issued driver’s licenses but do not know how to read the traffic signs, causing numerous traffic accidents in the borough,” one long-time resident told The Daily Wire. “And I stress numerous, just about every week you hear about another causing injury or property damage.”

“Cars are going the wrong way and there are wrecks at least once a week,” another resident said during a City Council meeting, The Mon Valley Independent reported this week. “Three very bad accidents in less than one month. Something needs to be done before somebody is killed.”

One resident questioned how immigrants are so easily getting driver’s licenses. In Pennsylvania, immigrants with Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, are eligible to apply for a driver’s licenses.

“We need to reach out to our legislature to make changes on the driving privileges of drivers brought to this area from other countries,” she said. “It does not appear that any additional training or licensing is done before they’re given the privilege of driving a car. Something terrible is going to happen.”

Similar to Springfield, schools in the Charleroi area are over capacity and struggling to pay for resources and teachers who can teach English as a second language.

“The Charleroi School District is overwhelmed trying to teach and communicate with all the new students, with most not knowing how to speak English and taking away learning time from the rest of the kids,” the resident told The Daily Wire.

According to a CBS report from March, the district had to hire additional ELL (English language learners) teachers, an ELL coach for the teachers, and an interpreter, which cost more than $400,000. An additional $300,000 was projected to be spent for the 2025 school year.

The town is also struggling to beef up law enforcement, due to both the sudden rise in immigrant population and an issue with police retention.

Charleroi has had to increase its police budget by $73,000, compared to last year, according to a report from The Mon Valley Independent published Thursday. Residents are worried the increase will spark higher taxes, despite assurances from the council that there won’t be a larger-than-expected tax increase next year.

“We want to keep the public safe. We are having issues we have never had before,” Council President Kristin Hopkins-Calcek said. “Our population has doubled and we have our police enforcing everything that citizens have demanded over time that they enforce.”

As highlighted by The Daily Wire, the Biden-Harris administration this past June expanded temporary legal status to 300,000 Haitians, lasting until at least February 2026. This allows these migrants to remain and work in the U.S. until then, and possibly beyond. This was awarded to any Haitian in the U.S. who was here before or on June 3.

Biden also has a program that allows 30,000 migrants per month from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to fly directly into the U.S. for two years if they have financial sponsors.

After the 2016 election result perplexed them, as none of them knew anyone who voted for Trump, the famous Rush Limbaugh said the NYT was sending "foreign correspondents" out to the heartland to find out what happened.

But in fact, the NYT didn't care then or now what the people in the heartland were thinking.

By the way, "detained immigrants"??  Is that the new label?  Is that what Ukraine calls Russian forces captured while attacking Kiev, detained immigrants?  Do they get free essential gender change surgery free in detention, healthcare is a human right you know...

as we reviewed the video and compared notes, we became concerned about the role of ABC News and what it did to our democracy. The moderators, who were supposed to be neutral referees, had decided in advance they were going to “fact check” Mr. Trump but not Ms. Harris.

She enlisted every charge ever leveled against Mr. Trump, regardless of the truth. That included, to name a few, the false claims that he favors a national abortion ban and opposes in vitro fertilization, that he called neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, Va., “very fine people,” and that he threatened a “bloodbath” if he loses the election.

Each is untrue: Mr. Trump has made clear he opposes a national abortion ban. He favors IVF and has even said the government should pay for it. He condemned the Charlottesville neo-Nazis. And he predicted a financial “bloodbath” for the auto industry if he loses and the Biden-Harris electric-vehicle mandates progress.

Had the moderators turned to Ms. Harris after these lies and said, “That has been debunked,” we might be having a totally different conversation about the debate, given how she tends to react when challenged. We would be saying she was having a good night until she couldn’t help herself and went too far. Mr. Trump would have been freed from having to spend so much time defending himself against false charges, and the country would have gotten to hear more of his plans for America.

Politics & Religion / Russian war economy

Interesting because a lot of earlier reports indicted Russia's war in Ukraine and resulting sanctions were not hurting its economy. 20% inflation, shortage of goods and workers says otherwise.

(Doug)  It's time to end this war.

Financial Times today:   (ft.com)
The Russian central bank raised its key interest rate by 1 percentage point to 19 per cent earlier today, citing high inflation and strong domestic demand. This is close to the all-time high of 20 per cent that was reached immediately after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The move is the second consecutive rate rise following a period from late 2023 to the end of July 2024 when it was held at 16 per cent. According to the CBR’s statement, annual inflation in Russia stands at 9 per cent, exceeding its previous forecast. The economy is starting to slow, but domestic demand still significantly exceeds supply and the labour market remains tight, the CBR said. (Source: ft.com)

A repeater of unverified rumor.  I'm happy to take the post down - until verified.

I believe the substance, they collaborated in every way possible on screen so why wouldn't they collaborate off screen.  But that doesn't mean a whistleblower has been identified.

There's a firewall between the Democrats in power and the Democrats in media, no possible backchannel:  Oops, head of ABC News introduced Kamala Harris to her husband Doug Emhoff.

Atop ABC, a Personal Connection to Kamala Harris - The New York Times
August 11, 2024 - The candidate is a longtime friend of Dana Walden, a senior Disney executive whose portfolio includes ABC News, the host of the next debate. ABC says she does not weigh in on editorial decisions

Since the 1980s, Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff have been such close friends with Dana and Matt Walden that the vice-president credits them with “being responsible” for her marriage.

Kind of dumb to prepare for more than a month and not ask your best friend for a teaser of the questions.  As if she had to ask...

And vice versa, ABC was preparing for more than a month to help Kamala all they could, as was apparent to everyone who watched, crazy not to ask her what questions will help most.

If "journalism ethics" prevent that kind of preferential treatment, then why did they fact check Trump 5 times and fact check Kamala's 25 lies not once?

Unheard of, totally unprecedented, unimaginable?

There are no journalism ethics in this crowd as everyone could see.

Founded in a Venezuelan prison where it ran a zoo, swimming pool, disco, restaurant and bar, the Tren de Aragua has grown into a fearsome transnational criminal force in less than a decade—“MS-13 on steroids,” as one federal official put it, referring to the Central American gang that is entrenched in many U.S. communities. The specter of crime caused by immigrants has become a major theme in the presidential campaign, with former President Donald Trump calling out “migrant crime” repeatedly. Federal crime data show homicides and other crimes have dropped—and that the U.S. is far safer than it used to be. The gang isn’t a household name, but its activities are a source of fascination on social media. “I think the Tren de Aragua in the U.S. could help elect Trump,” said Michael Shifter, a senior fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue think tank in Washington. (Doug). All items at Dollar Tree literally cost a dollar when Trump was President.

If the US dollar loses 25% of its original value every 4 years under these policies, how much is left after the proposed 5 terms of Biden, Harris, Walz?  Less than zero?

20,000 Haitian migrants invade a town of less than 60,000 is the story.

Whose idea was that?

"decisions in this rare but heartbreaking situation are now entrusted to families and their doctors instead of having the state mandate the standard of care."

Source StarTribune.com.

See previous post in this thread.

Mentioned in debate but not by ABC false fact checkers.

Yes the born unborn, known as a human life, is killed by withholding needed health care even though Walz' running mate just told us that Healthcare is a human right.

Not in this circumstance, apparently.

And they think the Florida law protecting human life at heartbeat is "extreme".

Deniers of science.
