Politics & Religion / Vivek on climate change
« on: October 03, 2024, 10:33:41 AM »
I think he was guest on O'Reilly or Kelly
but his take on climate change succinct and on target:

Climate change IS real

Whether due to man is not proven but does seem to correlate.

Whether having anything to do with carbon dioxide in atmosphere IS NOT clear at all since very little of the atmosphere is composed of CO2.

But there  are benefits to warmer climate and CO2 as well as problems.

Do the benefits outweigh or cancel out the downsides?

NO ONE knows.

He does not think that completely wiping out our energy supply on a hunch makes any sense at all.

Sounds more reasonable to me.
Better then screaming Climate Change is "hoax" when many Americans ARE worried about it and we need those votes.

Bottom line.

I wish people like Jonah would spend more time bashing the real enemy - the LEFT - as he does DJT.
[but then he would not get the CNN gig.

Stupid ass   :x  - we are losing, as pointed out by Doug, because of faux Rs like him who have been allowing the LEFT to walk all over us for decades.

Trump was the first to fight back albeit too clumsily costing us hard fought ground in the fight.

In this vein I had to say it was a real pleasure listening to the brilliant JD who was polite respectful calm and logical succinct and rattling dizzyingly reasonable arguments and one of the things I thought of ( as I am sure everyone else) was what a f'k'g pleasure not to hear name calling, belittling, you suck, I am the greatest in history stuff.

I don't agree with his assertion "leaders" (whoever that may be - does this include him?)
should not back Trump.  It is not up to him it is up to the voters and he won decisively in the primaries.

I don't think he ever recognizes or explains how so many support such a man as DJT and how we got here and RINOs like him failed us for 35 yrs.  I don't recall him every really addressing this.  Only he hates Trump.

I don't know if it is the end of America but it certainly could be the end of the Republican Party if Trump loses.
At least for a while.

His restaurant was just down the street from me in Boca Raton in early 90's.
He had a radio show in the restaurant in a glass booth.

Wilt Chamberlain had a restaurant nearby too.

I don't think there is anyone even close to Pete's record today.
If the young Bobby Witt can reproduce this season around 20 x he might come close.

I remember his also kicking Bud Harrelson's ass in a game against the Mets as well as smashing into Ray Fosse like a linebacker.  He was tough as nails.

Should he be in the hall?  I don't know.  I sort of lean towards the rules are the rules.

In other words nothing to see here move along and next up Harris is going to NC read the endless headlines and as Doug noted with TV dinners.

I do think it somewhat crazy that the candidates vying to be the first to visit the flood zone as a means to get the 6th grade gold star.

Trump should have had Elon fly him there by rocket ship to make a daring and glorious landing with one of his rockets loaded with water, food and Trumpy bears.

I don't agree a President has to dash to a disaster zone every time to make some sort of point.

I think phone calls are good enough but these days it is all about the headline photo op.

While ammunition makes for fine trade goods, if you like investing in metals..

I recently sold my old silver nickels dimes quarters and halves and dollars when silver was 22 to 23 .  I started, like everyone else pulling these out of circulation 1965 when I was eight.

So held in a tool box for 59 yrs.  I knew that would be the time to buy as silver is now over 30.  I should have told everyone here to buy!   :|

OTOH it was only 5 to 6 K worth of stuff.

If only I was older and had money I would have been going to banks and hoarding up in the 60s.  Would have done like others - go to Vegas and gather as many silver dollars as I could fit in a rental truck  :-)

" I thought him weak on the J6 line of attack, which he had to know was coming.   I would have used it to pivot to the underlying issue being the Dems fierce campaign to sabotage vote integrity leading to the American people distrusting the outcomes.  "

yes 600 lawyers descended to multiple states to be sure every single vote rule was changed , sometimes against State Constitutions to make it easier to collect ballots many with no IDs etc  and sure enough we went to bed seeing Trump was ahead and woke up to find 10s of thousands of ballots mysteriously show up and get counted and Biden is not ahead in all those same red states.

and hell yeah , of course any objective observer would be suspicious.

I though Vance is was very good ,  should humility unlike Trump , very smart and has the gift of gab unlike Harris,
but I too noticed a few times I thought he left out a few things I thought important though I don't remember what now.

NO coincidence they DNC biased referees saved 1/6 for last.

214
And was not the last topic/question/or DNC point about 1/6?

Of course.

Will you except the election results.

Of course everyone from DC to Beijing investigated the election and NOT one found "proof" of cheating.

Do you NOW say Trump lost the '20 election ?  Do you !  Do you say it now!

[we need a headline for tomorrow to bash you and Trump over the skull with]

----------- Conversely I don't think I heard:

Did they ask Waltz :

Do you now admit Biden was not fit for office for a long time and it was covered up by Harris et al?

Do you admit Afghanistan was the greatest military blunder since Pickett's charge?

Do you admit the border is wide open!

Do you admit that phony "bipartisan" bill would have done nothing to stem the flood of illegals coming into this country it would only expedite their as you say "processing" into a more orderly fashion..

Used to drive by this diner daily and am sure I have eaten there thought not in over 40 yrs

*On November 30, 2005, a patron complained about a foul odor and flies around a car at the Huck Finn Diner in Union, New Jersey. The car had been parked at the diner for the last six weeks. The restaurant manager called the police, who discovered the decomposing body of Lawrence Ricci in the trunk; he had been shot. There was speculation that the Genovese family killed Ricci during his trial because he had refused to accept a plea bargain and a prison sentence. A law enforcement official was also quoted as saying the slaying resulted from an unrelated power struggle in Ricci's mob crew.[4]

In March 2007, federal authorities linked Genovese member Michael Coppola to the Ricci murder.[5] However, no charges have been filed against Coppola.*

Another diner nearer to me now also involved in shooting mob style :

Why are we only up 2 to 3 seats in Senate and maybe losing in the House.

Is it poor candidates?

Is it the Trump effect? Let us not remember he is more of a loser than winner.    He only won '16 by a tiny hair.  Then we lost '18, '20, '22 .

Science, Culture, & Humanities / Cyrus and the Jews
« on: September 30, 2024, 10:16:57 AM »
from Wikipedia:

Jewish texts
The treatment of the Jews by Cyrus during their exile in Babylon after Nebuchadnezzar II destroyed Jerusalem is reported in the Bible. Cyrus is represented positively and as an agent of Yahweh, even though he is said to "not know" Yahweh (Isaiah 45:4–5).[129]

The Jewish Bible's Ketuvim ends in Second Chronicles with the decree of Cyrus, which returned the exiles to the Promised Land from Babylon along with a commission to rebuild the temple.[130]

Thus saith Cyrus, king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD, the God of heaven given me; and He hath charged me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whosoever there is among you of all His people – the LORD, his God, be with him – let him go there. — (2 Chronicles 36:23)

This edict is also fully reproduced in the Book of Ezra.

In the first year of King Cyrus, Cyrus the king issued a decree: "Concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, let the temple, the place where sacrifices are offered, be rebuilt and let its foundations be retained, its height being 60 cubits and its width 60 cubits; with three layers of huge stones and one layer of timbers. And let the cost be paid from the royal treasury. Also let the gold and silver utensils of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, be returned and brought to their places in the temple in Jerusalem; and you shall put them in the house of God." — (Ezra 6:3–5)

The Cyrus Street, Jerusalem
The Jews honored him as a dignified and righteous king. In one Biblical passage, Isaiah refers to him as Messiah (lit. "His anointed one") (Isaiah 45:1), making him the only gentile to be so referred. Elsewhere in Isaiah, God is described as saying, "I will raise up Cyrus in my righteousness: I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild my city and set my exiles free, but not for a price or reward, says God Almighty." (Isaiah 45:13) As the text suggests, Cyrus did ultimately release the nation of Israel from its exile without compensation or tribute. These particular passages (Isaiah 40–55, often referred to as Deutero-Isaiah) are believed by most modern critical scholars to have been added by another author toward the end of the Babylonian exile (c. 536 BC).[131]

Josephus, the first-century Jewish historian, relates the traditional view of the Jews regarding the prediction of Cyrus in Isaiah in his Antiquities of the Jews, book 11, chapter 1:[132]

In the first year of the reign of Cyrus, which was the seventieth from the day that our people were removed out of their own land into Babylon, God commiserated the captivity and calamity of these poor people, according as he had foretold to them by Jeremiah the prophet, before the destruction of the city, that after they had served Nebuchadnezzar and his posterity, and after they had undergone that servitude seventy years, he would restore them again to the land of their fathers, and they should build their temple, and enjoy their ancient prosperity. And these things God did afford them; for he stirred up the mind of Cyrus, and made him write this throughout all Asia: "Thus saith Cyrus the king: Since God Almighty hath appointed me to be king of the habitable earth, I believe that he is that God which the nation of the Israelites worship; for indeed he foretold my name by the prophets, and that I should build him a house at Jerusalem, in the country of Judea." This was known to Cyrus by his reading the book which Isaiah left behind him of his prophecies; for this prophet said that God had spoken thus to him in a secret vision: "My will is, that Cyrus, whom I have appointed to be king over many and great nations, send back my people to their own land, and build my temple." This was foretold by Isaiah one hundred and forty years before the temple was demolished. Accordingly, when Cyrus read this, and admired the Divine power, an earnest desire and ambition seized upon him to fulfill what was so written; so he called for the most eminent Jews that were in Babylon, and said to them, that he gave them leave to go back to their own country, and to rebuild their city Jerusalem, and the temple of God, for that he would be their assistant, and that he would write to the rulers and governors that were in the neighborhood of their country of Judea, that they should contribute to them gold and silver for the building of the temple, and besides that, beasts for their sacrifices.

Painting of Daniel and Cyrus before the Idol Bel
While Cyrus is praised in the Tanakh (Isaiah 45:1–6 and Ezra 1:1–11), there was Jewish criticism of him after he was lied to by the Cuthites, who wanted to halt the building of the Second Temple. They accused the Jews of conspiring to rebel, so Cyrus in turn stopped the construction, which would not be completed until 515 BC, during the reign of Darius I.[133][134]

According to the Bible, it was King Artaxerxes who was convinced to stop the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. (Ezra 4:7–24)

Statue of Cyrus the Great at Olympic Park in Sydney
The historical nature of this decree has been challenged. Professor Lester L Grabbe argues that there was no decree but that there was a policy that allowed exiles to return to their homelands and rebuild their temples. He also argues that the archaeology suggests that the return was a "trickle", taking place over perhaps decades, resulting in a maximum population of perhaps 30,000.[135] Philip R. Davies called the authenticity of the decree "dubious", citing Grabbe and adding that arguing against "the authenticity of Ezra 1.1–4 is J. Briend, in a paper given at the Institut Catholique de Paris on 15 December 1993, who denies that it resembles the form of an official document but reflects rather biblical prophetic idiom."[136] Mary Joan Winn Leith believes that the decree in Ezra might be authentic and along with the Cylinder that Cyrus, like earlier rulers, was through these decrees trying to gain support from those who might be strategically important, particularly those close to Egypt which he wished to conquer. She also wrote that "appeals to Marduk in the cylinder and to Yahweh in the biblical decree demonstrate the Persian tendency to co-opt local religious and political traditions in the interest of imperial control."[137]

Some modern Muslims have suggested that the Quranic figure of Dhu al-Qarnayn is a representation of Cyrus the Great, but the scholarly consensus is that he is a development of legends concerning Alexander the Great.[138]
