Slate: The cognitive dissonance of Left Economics
« Reply #2050 on: June 10, 2024, 05:37:06 AM »
One more try at saying the economy is not Biden's fault, Biden's problem is not the economy, Biden did nothing wrong but people don't appreciate the great job he is doing.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2024/06/biden-inflation-polls-pandemic-covid.html

It's not high inflation, and It wasn't the excess spending that caused it. It was housing. We didn't build enough for 10 years, strange how that includes the Trump years.

Why isn't the private sector building more housing, a question the author doesn't ask or answer.

Owning your own home is a symbol of the American dream, gone under Biden. Being able to move out of your own home is another symbol, gone under Biden.

Among the omissions, he compares Biden inflation to other presidents, but not to Trump, who was the alternative to Biden in 2020 and the one he faces now. He gives no clue how he's measuring it but he understates Biden inflation.

But to his point about housing, how much housing do we need? Not mentioned is that it depends on how many people we're going to have. Tens of Millions flooding across the border might have an effect on that.

What else drives up the cost of housing? Answer, everything that liberals do.

One little fyi about Left Economics. What will liberals do to address the high cost of housing? Subsidize! But subsidies do nothing but drive the price further up for those who don't receive them, and make permanently dependent those who do.

Joe Biden is unpopular because his policies aren't working. They aren't working for the 60% that he's unpopular with. The other 40% aren't happy with his results either but know that voicing honest disapproval to the pollster will help his opponent win the election.

Left policies have bad consequences. The left answer is do more of the same. The right answer when you're in a hole is to stop digging.

Right. Trump is not talking down America. He is talking down the people who have been running it these last 4 years.
----------------------
One more footnote to Joe Biden's unpopularity, his turn for the worse started with the Afghanistan withdrawal disaster. That's when the country knew we were led by incompetents and he never recovered.  Our enemies and adversaries clearly saw it. Wasn't that the spark that started the Ukraine war and Hamas war? And potentially the war in Taiwan. Because they can.  Remember the lists of equipment left behind in Afghanistan, taxpayer owned equipment. And remember the people left behind.

He canceled the Keystone Pipeline in his first minute in office as part of his anti-energy war,, with the intention of starving us of energy and driving up the prices of everything tied to energy, which is everything. And he succeeded.

They failed us at home and they failed us abroad. The first debate is this month. Someone, Trump, needs to call them out on all that. And same goes for the races for Congress. They're spending our money, but what did they do with the money we already gave them? They left our military equipment behind, hundreds of billions of dollars, in the hands of terrorists, and didn't hold anyone accountable.

It's time for a change of direction.

Normally I post Reason pieces in full here as they don’t care about how their material is shared (yay libertarians!), but in this instance there is an “undercover” video recorded, one that makes for a thin gruel but is ballyhooed nonetheless.

The “ultra right wing gathering” claim, moreover, doesn’t pass the stink test. I’ll note there was once a nastily little flyer about an incident I was involved with circulating the ID’d me as an “ultra right wing martial arts expert.” Expect my ultra bona fides might be debated around here, while I claim at best middling’ martial arts skills. The similar claim here is every bit as silly:

Always the same group of aristocratic Democrats.

And as always they have their excuses.

Mr. Mandel disputed comparisons between business leaders writing checks to Mr. Trump and what was on display from the wealthy entertainment industry on Saturday.

“Let me tell you what Julia Roberts and Jimmy Kimmel and Mark Hamill are not doing,” he said. “They are not asking Joe Biden to lower the corporate tax rate. They are not asking Joe Biden to lower their personal income tax rate.”

Not the same "moral equivalence" because they are with righteousness and the good while the other side is evil and dark.

Oh I get it.

I did not even realize what June 19 th was for till I read it this AM.

I was thinking that was the first day a slave arrived in the  US
I mixed it up with 1619.

Haven't we already had reparations essentially with the big social programs of LBJ[erk]?

How well that worked out =>

“Progressive” Meltdown
« Reply #2060 on: June 19, 2024, 06:26:43 PM »
What is wrong with all these people who won’t buy what “Progressive” Dems are selling? Don’t they know noble intentions surmount unfortunate empiric outcomes that are in fact intended, but can’t be claimed as such?

@VDHanson

Anatomy of a Full Leftwing Meltdown

The media is afire with warnings of the impending Trump “dictatorship”. Celebrities, the Squad, and Biden administration grandees vie to conjure up the most nightmarish things that Trump might do to them.
What drives their current mounting hysteria?

1) The Left feels it may be heading to an historic 1972 McGovern-like or 1980 Carteresque blowout. And it is terrified at this late date that it cannot do anything either about the escalating dementia of Joe Biden, or the terror instilled by the specter of either a President or continued Vice-President Kamala Harris.

2) It knows that a first-term novice Trump had a successful four years, and that he now is savvier four years later—and far more likely and able to overturn the entire four-year Biden catastrophe and thus enjoy an even more successful second term.

3) It fears that all it did to destroy democracy—the Russian collusion hoax, the Russian disinformation laptop farce, the two first-term impeachments the moment the Republicans lost the House, the Senate trial of ex-President Trump as a private citizen, the effort to remove Trump from state ballots, and the five criminal and civil show trials designed to bankrupt the leading presidential candidate and keep him off the campaign trail—might boomerang on the Left.

So, it is in full panic that its unconstitutional efforts to destroy Trump will obviously be used against itself—given it knows that if it returned to power it would go after its enemies in precisely the same, any-means-necessary ways that it had sought to destroy Trump. That is, they have destroyed norms and have established dangerous new precedents that they just assume, given their Jacobin nature, must rebound against themselves.

4) The Left is terrified that growing voter repugnance now extends even to traditional Democratic constituencies—Latinos, Blacks, Asians, Jews, the young, and even the college educated. And the Left privately grasps that these defections are fueled not just by the obnoxiousness and dementia of Joe Biden, but due to his far-left agendas that left us with abhorrent inflation, wild unsustainable federal deficits, a lethal open border, 10-million unaudited and often dangerous illegal aliens, foreign policy catastrophes, woke racial and tribal disunity, spiraling urban crime, and cultural extremism. Leftists accept that while in secret they blame the cognitively challenged Joe for their dilemmas, deep-down they know that “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves”—that is, in their own failed revolution that has utterly repulsed Americans and nearly destroyed the country.

5) In the next five months, the Left and Democrats know that they must pander to try to save themselves. But the more Biden panders, the more obvious, repugnant, and counterproductive the pandering becomes. The public is growing sick of Biden’s 11th-hour groveling to save himself from his self-created oblivion. And the more in his last days as President he drains even more the strategic petroleum reserve, the more he cancels student loan debt, the more he abandons Israel to win a few thousand votes in Michigan, the more he pressures the Fed to lower interest rates, the more he flips on tariffs, and the more he grants blanket amnesties to illegal aliens—all the more the country at large becomes disgusted at the low effort to temporarily appease particular voting blocs at the expense of the general interest of the country.

6) As we watch the Left go through the proverbial cycles of “denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance”, it will increasingly deny the accuracy of supposedly inaccurate swing state polls, then angrily damn the supposedly clueless, deplorable electorate, then turn to all sorts of dreams of remedies (changing or violating more voting laws being the most prominent), then get sullen about the entire American project, and only finally accept the inevitable of what likely lies ahead.

I don't know why Carville always seems to get so much respect.  He is nothing more than an opinionated partisan.

Perhaps misfiled: Vote for bread and circuses, anyone? Oregon is seeking to tax all businesses earning more than $25 million 3% and then distribute it “equally” to all Oregon residents. Those who favor a guaranteed minimum income are all over this; however anyone with a non-Keynesian perspective could ID a number of issues with this noble plan:

Taylor Swift, Time’s "Person of the Year" in 2024 pontificates climate change is one of the most “horrific situations that we find ourselves facing right now.” But that position didn’t prevent her from traveling 178,000 miles on her two private jets in 2023.

But the little people should stay home - when they're not traveling to concerts.

Here is another one.

An unnamed senior administration official told the WSJ, “The president has wanted to do everything that he could to make sure that American consumers have the lowest price possible at the pump, as it affects families’ daily lives.”

The Keystone XL pipeline was cancelled Biden's first minute in office, for what purpose?  Pipelines don't emit.  The purpose was to disrupt the supply chain of oil - so we would use less of it,  save the planet.  What is the mechanism of disrupting a supply chain?  Drive up the price.

The first thing, most important thing he did upon taking office was to drive up the price of energy, fossil fuels, oil, gas.

Compare that with the false statement above in italics.

I am sooo tired of the Leftist lies and the pretend gullible taking it all in like nothing's wrong.

FWIW I always thought Streisand was an ugly duckling.
I had a Nursing Home patient who told me one of her relatives had a song stolen and Streisand was singing it.
She couldn't think of her name just said the Jewish girl.  I though Bett Midler - no;  Barbra Streisand - yes, her.

She does have a superb singing voice, and I guess she could act though I cannot think of one movie she was in that I could sit through from beginning to end without being bored.

Wholeheartedly agree.  They use 'far right' like it's people who favor totalitarianism and it's just the opposite.  'Far right' is the people who most strongly  oppose fascism, communism and totalitarianism.

If we're really so bad, why the need to lie about us?

Insert Crafty's American Creed definition here, free minds, free people, etc.
Insert Heritage's Index of Economic Freedom definition here:
https://www.heritage.org/index/
Promoting Economic Opportunity, Individual Empowerment, and Prosperity

That's 'far right'.  Not anarchy, not zero government, but a government that acts as the referee, not joining sides with the participants.

What is so evil, scary, radical, extreme about that?

The only example they can point to of larger government is restricting the right to kill your young.  Sounds fascist until you follow the science and admit there is a human in there dying to get out.

And even in the case of abortion politics, the 'right' wants to return the rule making to the people, to the states.

The world we live in.  I suggest a 12 year plan to turn things around, turn around the nation's relationship with government.  Trump proved he couldn't do it in 4 and he can't do it with a Nancy Pelosi-like, Hakeem Jeffries House or a Chuck Schumer Senate.

I have an acquaintance, son of a good friend, who works for a major FBI office on the west coast.  Of course everything he does is secret.  As I understand it, they do real work out there, hard work investigating real crime, nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with all the DC rot at the top, the Comey, Mueller, Strzuk, Paige and targeting BS.  Just real people doing difficult and dangerous jobs against real crime, real criminals and threats.

If true, having these three letter agencies run by great guys like that (if he is) and having all the corrupt, political scoundrels tossed out won't happen quickly or easily but needs to happen or this country is doomed.

Dear Dems: Don’t Dish It Out if You Can’t Deal with It
« Reply #2074 on: July 03, 2024, 06:16:35 PM »
Some self-inflicted injuries land harder than others:

@VDHanson

Animal Farm Democrats

Leftists make up things as they go along, as yesterday’s heresies (e.g., Biden seems demented) become today’s orthodoxies (e.g. Biden really is demented)—depending on the current party directive about what is most advantageous.

So many of the Democrats current dilemmas are self-inflicted— a result of their often illegal and always unethical efforts to warp democracy that boomerang upon them and remind us that hubris really does earn nemesis.

Note that there would never have been any presidential immunity suit before the Supreme Court had the Biden administration just not orchestrated local, state, and federal prosecutors to neuter Trump, Joe Biden’s 2024 presidential opponent.

That current lawfare effort marked the third sequential attempt to sabotage a political opponent’s campaign—following Hillary’s 2016 Russian “collusion”/Steele “dossier” scam, and Joe’s 2020 Russian “disinformation”/ “51 intelligence authorities” ruse.

In other words, had Nathan Wade not synchronized with the White House counsel’s office, had Merrick Garland not had his third-ranking federal prosecutor take over the Manhattan prosecution from the incompetent Alvin Bragg, and had not Garland picked the biased and previously failed special counsel Jack Smith to hound and rush to judgement Trump, the question of presidential immunity from Biden’s orchestrated lawfare would have never come up before the court.

The leftwing panic over Biden’s cognitive decline in the debate is not because he is clearly unable to fulfill the duties of a president (is there any other job in America that Joe Biden could perform other than being in charge of the nuclear codes?), and thus might injure the country. The hysteria instead arises solely because he might lose the Democrats power, either by losing the election—or by winning it, then crashing, and passing the country off into the hands of a cackling Kamala Harris.

Joe Biden should rejoice over the Supreme Court immunity ruling. After all, as president he knowingly and unlawfully kept classified files in his numerous private residences. He only came forward in fear—after siccing a special counsel after Trump for the same alleged crimes—that someone might ask whether Joe himself had such files.

Remember also that Biden’s ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer was illegally given access to the files by Biden, and then in Hillary-style defied a federal subpoena by destroying taped evidence of such breaches—and with complete impunity.

Had the Democrats not gone berserk when Robert Hur found Biden indictable, save for his cognitive decline that would supposedly win him sympathy from a nullifying jury, and instead simply had agreed that Joe was near senile, and thus should have been indicted, then they would have had months and a real primary to have selected a living, breathing candidate.

Given the Harris dilemma—will any future presidential candidate ever again demagogue before the convention by boasting that he would pick his VP running-mate on the basis of race and gender (unless he is an incumbent facing conviction and removal, and thus envisions a mediocre VP candidate as an insurance policy)?

Why after years of the left caricaturing the Trump orange dermis, did an ashen Joe Biden reemerge bright Trumpian orange after his disastrous debate? Will any leftist ever again caricature the Trump tan that apparently now has offered a model of recovery for an in-extremis pallid Biden? Will this start a trend—emerge after a disastrous performance bright orange to reassure the nation you are A-Ok?

How could Chuck Schumer now grandstand and seriously say anything about Supreme Court decorum? In 2020 at the head of a frenzied pro-abortion throng, he threatented two justices by name and implied violence upon their persons? (“I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you”)?

Months later protestors, showed up illegally—but exempt from arrest given the conservative targets of their intimidation—at the homes of the justices, among them a would-be assassin.

The more Democrats grow hysterical, thrash about, and connive, all the more so they self-destruct.

 :-D

Leftist Assassins Targeted House Republicans, a Conservative Justice and Now a President
"Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation," Joe Biden
July 14, 2024 by Daniel Greenfield 28 Comments
Newsletter

“Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation,” Joe Biden tweeted. “He’s a threat to our freedom. He’s a threat to our democracy. He’s literally a threat to everything America stands for.”

Yesterday he declared, “most importantly, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, Trump is a threat to this nation.”

This kind of rhetoric depicting Trump as the ultimate threat had become normalized. Is it any wonder that it was also acted on?

There’s a pattern here.

A Bernie Sanders supporter opened fire at a Congressional baseball game and brought along a list of House Freedom Caucus members. The FBI falsely claimed that he wasn’t targeting anyone.

Justice Kavanaugh was the subject of an assassination plot by a deranged leftist.

And now a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally, wounding President Trump, killing one attendee and wounding others.

Despite that pattern, the media repeatedly claimed that the violence was coming from conservatives, and the Biden administration, his secret service brass, and Democrats colluded to deny Trump full security and protection.

Even now the media is warning that the real threat will come from a conservative reaction to the attempted assassination.

The danger to this country is coming from the Left.

The violence is coming from the Left.

And the coverup of that violence and the criminalization of conservatives is also coming from the Left.

The Left pulls the trigger and then blames those who were shot for the violence.

Ear Truthers of the World Unite!
« Reply #2080 on: July 17, 2024, 11:30:22 AM »
When an inconvenient truth inconvenient to them—specifically that their unhinged hate mongering lead to what they precisely hoped for—arises the left does what they accuse others of doing: they deny its importance. Hence the rise of a new movement: Ear Trutherism….

Rise of the Ear Truthers
"That apparently grazed his ear"
July 16, 2024 by Daniel Greenfield 17 Comments
Newsletter

“Democrats must recover quickly and say: Trump has been uniquely responsible for stoking the violence that apparently grazed his ear,” The Nation’s Joan Walsh wrote.

Beyond the obvious ju-jitsu of a leftist blaming one of her targets for getting shot, there’s that ‘apparently’ in there.

Walsh had also tweeted, “Has there been any kind of news conference by Trump’s doctors? I just find this weirder every moment.”

“Is Trump’s bandage covering evidence that he wasn’t shot? Still waiting for confirmation from credible sources beyond Trump on his Truth Social that he was actually hit by a bullet rather than hit by glass or other debris,” Steven Beschloss, a professor at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, tweeted.

The rise of the Ear Truthers has been the most exciting development in lefty discourse yet with BlueAnons analyzing photos and claiming that Trump’s ear was never injured and it was a blood pack and that even if it was, it was by broken glass, not a bullet, and that doctors are staging an ear coverup.

Ear Truthers had all sorts of explanations such as the blood was put on by the Secret Service while removing Trump. They’ve argued that either the ear bled too much or too little considering the caliber of bullet and the graze.

Since sites like Daily Beast, Salon and Slate exist purely to launder the deranged fantasies of a certain clique of upper middle class perpetually online liberals, they’re flirting with the narrative already.

Mystery Over Trump’s Diagnosis and Treatment After Assassination Attempt – Daily Beast

Does any of the Ear Trutherism change anything? Obviously not. But rather than deal with the uncomfortable reality of what happened, Ear Trutherism changes the subject, nibbling away at the details, as conspiracy theories tend to do, to avoid grappling with the larger truths, in the hopes that enough nibbles, enough claims of “this doesn’t look right” can be made to add up to a denial of the truth.

The Contradictions Implicit in Efforts to Oust Biden
« Reply #2081 on: July 20, 2024, 12:44:00 PM »
VHD takes points out the ironies implicit in current efforts to oust Biden:

Democracy Really Is Dying in Darkness—But by Whom?

Never in modern presidential history has a political party staged a veritable inside coup to remove their current president from his ongoing candidacy for his party’s nomination and reelection.

Stranger still, the very elites and grandees, who now are using every imaginable means of deposing Biden as their nominee, are the very public voices that just weeks ago insisted that candidate Biden was “sharp as a tack” and “fit as a fiddle.” And they damned any who thought otherwise!

They are also the identical operators whose machinations ensured that there would not be an open Democratic primary. They demonized the few on the Left who weakly challenged Biden in the primaries. Yet now they will select a replacement candidate who likely never received a single primary vote.

Note further: Biden’s impending forced abdication is not because he is non compos mentis.

Rather, the inside move is due to Biden’s disastrous debate exposure that confirmed his dementia could no longer be disguised by a conspiracy of leftist politicos and media.

But far more importantly, the impetus for removal is driven by the admission that the cognitively Biden is headed for a climactic November defeat.

Were Biden now ahead in the polls by five points, these same backroom machinists would be insisting that he was still Pericles.

Yet now Biden is being un-personed and Trotskyized, as we prepare the new groupthink narrative of his likely surrogate—a soon to be praised eloquent, mellifluous, and articulate Cicero-Harris.

That Biden will likely remain as president until January 20, 2025, should remind the country the Left is more worried about its own next four-year continuance in power than the fate of the country that now admittedly will be guided in the next six months by a president judged unfit by his own supporters to run for the very office that he will still keep holding.

Further irony arises when those who, as supposedly guardians of democratic norms, pontificated to the country the last nine years about the Trump-Hitlerian threat to democracy. Yet now they so cavalierly work overtime on how:

a) to pull off the removal of their candidate from the November ballot on grounds of senility,

b) but not the removal of the same president from office (their own fate is more precious than our collective fate as a nation),

c) while trying to select, rather than elect, a replace candidate,

d) without ever offering any explanation, much less an apology, how a Democrat president from January 20, 2021, was daily declared vibrant, dynamic, and engaged but suddenly one day after June 27, 2024, was remanufactured as not?

Perhaps as an aid and primer on Biden removal they should reread the essay by former Obama Pentagon official Rosa Books. Just 11 days after the Trump inauguration, she published in Foreign Policy, “3 Ways to Get Rid of President Trump Before 2020”.

It was a veritable manual on the various ways of removing the just inaugurated president—listing immediate alternatives to the distant 2020 election: impeachment and conviction, 25th-Amendment removal, and, barring all that, a military coup: “The fourth possibility is one that until recently I would have said was unthinkable in the United States of America: a military coup, or at least a refusal by military leaders to obey certain orders.”

So, to make sense of what these self-appointed and sanctimonious protectors of democracy are trying to pull off demands an Orwellian vocabulary—memory hole, newspeak, unperson, and groupthink.

Yet there is one more irony.

Very soon, those who welcomed the protests of summer 2020 radicals, and exempted the rioting and violence, and then again did nothing in 2024 as mobs tore apart campuses and shut down public facilities, will host a Chicago convention—where those very same liberated forces may wreak havoc on the outside, while their backroom progenitors, with threats, money, and the media, will wreak havoc on democracy on the inside.

This one will leave a mark. Gent here is responding to the claim one a recently made dead terrorist was a terrorist involved in ceasefire negotiations:

Here’s @AlexCrawfordSky’s “very moderate” guy, talking about sacrificing Palestinian “children, women and the elderly” for the cause. That guy who was filmed laughing as he watched Oct 7 happening live.

He’s not “very moderate” Alex.
But he is “very dead”

Cognitive Dissonance of the Left, Supreme Court Term Limits
« Reply #2086 on: August 04, 2024, 10:30:51 AM »
Bad Idea.

Just a little irony here.  The guy that has been Senator since 1972 and won't leave the Presidency except kicking and screaming thinks Supreme Court Justices stay too long.  He stopped short of requiring cognitive testing.

I've not confirmed these figures, but they seem to be in the ballpark of what I have confirmed, and should be something Trump and Vance hammer on:

Under Joe Biden & Kamala Harris, here’s what America voted for:
Gas: +49.1%
Electricity: +31.6%
Fuel oil: +46.4%
Airfare: +32%
Hotels: +52.3%
Groceries: +21.3%
Eating out: +22.7%
Baby food: +30.5%
Rent: +21.5%
Used cars: +21.3%
Public transportation: +22.3%
Real average weekly earnings: -3.6%

Those number sound right to me.  Would love to have a source before wading into battle elsewhere with them.

I think the grocery number is understated.
https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/food-inflation-in-the-united-states/
The 3rd chart shows the years, (but not the compounding).

https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2022/prices-for-food-at-home-up-13-5-percent-for-year-ended-august-2022.htm

https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/ag-and-food-statistics-charting-the-essentials/food-prices-and-spending/?topicId=1afac93a-444e-4e05-99f3-53217721a8be

I suspect they are adding annual increases instead of compounding them.

Democrats blame grocery stores:
https://time.com/6977026/democrats-biden-executive-authority-grocery-prices/
https://www.supermarketnews.com/news/biden-corporations-stop-ripping-people-grocery-prices

Try closing grocery stores, like they did in the George Floyd neighborhood, and see what happens.

Strange to deny price increase AND blame the grocery industry:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/07/11/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-the-june-consumer-price-index-2/

How can they have it both ways with our vicious watchdog media holding them accountable?

I’ve gone to the person who posted and asked for source material. He stated he can produce it, then responded later the spreadsheet he had created had some breaks in links to source material. Hopefully something will eventually be forthcoming, but I regret posting first and then asking for supporting data after doing so.

This one was:

beware my sarcasm as I vent:

We had our first gay governor.

But Mikie Sherrill would be the first ***democrat*** governor of NJ .

Lets all cheer now at the thought.
Another first for the Crats and their identity politics
we need a black governor
a black female gov
an hispanic gov
male and female
Hindu gov male and female
a trans gov
or at the very least a "nonbinary" one
we need one born in Asia one from Africa one from the Caribbean one from  South and from Central America.
a native American
did I leave anyone out?

oh wait , how about a polynesian?
first midget?

any crats read this board who can fill in any blanks I left out due to white male supremacy Republican thinking?

thank you
I feel one iota better
